These grain free dog treats have become a hit in our household. When I first came across a recipe that was similar to this, I knew they would become a staple. And they have! For a long time I have been looking for ways to not only save money, but to keep my gluten free pooch just that, gluten free. |
Buying treats at the store can be expensive and a guessing game as to what you are actually getting in a treat. That is what started my search and with much interest and excitement I improvised the original recipe and threw in some of my own favorites to make Darcy, my dog, his now “all time favorite grain free dog treats.
Below is the main recipe I have developed and you can improvise to make it your own…
***If you don’t have an issue using grains, certified gluten free oats will be a nice addend to the flour I use. I will include it as an optional ingredient in the recipe itself since I have made it that way too. This will make it gluten free dog treats, not grain free.
The Recipe:
What you will need:
· Medium bowl
· Measuring cup
· Spatula
· Your hands-clean of course
Ingredients:
½ cup of Peanut Butter ( I use Crunchy because Darcy like the “Crunch”)
¼ Molasses
1 to 1 ½ tsp. Pumpkin Pie Spice
2 cups of Almond Flour (or 1 cup of Almond flour and 1 cup of GF Oats - makes it not grain free)
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees f. Spray a cookie sheet with coconut oil spray or whatever oil spray you have.
In a medium bowl add all the ingredients together and mix well. This is where the spatula comes in handy. I actually recommend using your hands to knead the dough. You will feel it come together as you knead it to a thick consistency. Knead it for about 1 minute thoroughly or until all ingredients are well mixed. Use good judgement.
Next, take small ball-like portions, the size of a quarter or smaller, and work together with your hands. Form a small cookie like piece and place on cookie sheet. Use good judgement based on size of your furry friend…Darcy is a Shih Tzu so I make mine smaller.
Once cookie sheet/s are filled, you can bake for 10-15 minutes. We have a gas oven so I have to watch mine carefully so that they don’t burn.
A full batch should make 2-4 dozen. Not bad for a few cents on the dollar with ingredients you probably already have in your home.
Recently I doubled my batch and saved some away in the freezer. I have found that the cookie treat freezes well and can be a great emergency go to when the treats run out.
May your Lovable canine love their grain free dog treats as much as my little guy loves his!
