Gluten Sensitivity?
Gluten Intolerance?
Celiac?
How do you know the difference?
These are questions that run through many minds. That is why you are here. It may have run through your mind. They are legitimate questions that deserve answers.
A misdiagnosis is a real danger. It has happened and that is why it is important to investigate what the differences are. Many have gone to the Doctor's office to test for celiac only to have a negative result return to them. They think that all is OK, but is it really?
Not likely, since they may still suffer. And if left untreated, it can eventually turn into full blown celiac disease. It has happened to many times to be taken lightly.
Both can have the some of the same symptoms; however, celiac has a more severe the degree of symptoms.
It is important to note that gluten sensitivity or intolerance is NOT a disease. Celiac IS a disease.
**Important to Note:
Getting a blood test for celiac AND gluten sensitivity or inolerance separately will determine the best results.
Let’s say a person claims to be allergic to dust. The severity is unknown. When that person who comes across dust in a household, they would start sneezing as a sign.
They are sensitive to the dust particles in the air.
However, what if they get full blown hives and asthma attack from lying on a rug that has dust on it or being in a dusty room?
That allergy would take a whole new level because it would then lend itself to a severe reaction.
That is the difference between sensitivity(sneezing) and celiac (full blown hives and asthma attack).
The severity.
They both require our attention; however, one can create a more severe reaction and can, if left untended, be fatal.
Believe it or not, there is a slight difference.
Again the difference is in the severity. For example, using the same illustration of a person allergic to dust. They may have a slight reaction such as light eye irritation and itchy nose to a more severe reaction such as puffy eyes and a itchy nose that starts to run.
Make sense? I hope so...
Either way the importance of noticing the signs can help you take action and get you on the path to better health.
According to livestrong.com:
“Gluten sensitivity is similar to gluten intolerance in that it means the body has trouble digesting gluten. It can cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as upset stomach and may lead to fatigue, brain fog, headaches and tingling in the extremities, according to the University of Maryland School of Medicine. However, a major distinguishing factor is that gluten sensitivity isn’t as severe as gluten intolerance, and it doesn’t cause damage or increased permeability in the intestines. In a study published in a 2011 issue of “BMC Medicine,” researchers concluded that people with gluten intolerance and people with gluten sensitivity experience different immune responses to gluten.”
The article link above is brilliant.
